Error code F73, FAULT - 73
Appliance Coffee Machine
Quick answer

F73 on a Miele coffee machine means the brew unit cannot reach its start position. Built-in and countertop models differ.

Model compatibility

Miele reuses codes across series and model years, so F73, FAULT - 73 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

F73 means the brew unit cannot move into its start position or is soiled.

What F73 means

F73, or FAULT – 73, tells you the brew unit cannot move to its start position. On a built-in machine it may also be soiled so the ground coffee cannot be pressed. On capsule models, a capsule that is not pushed onto the capsule plate correctly may be damaged.

Built-in machines (CVA 2xxx to 7xxx)

For a machine with a grinder, check whether the brew unit can be removed. If it can, confirm the message with OK and clean the brew unit under running water without cleaning agents. Push the coffee ejector into the start position, insert only the grounds container and the water container, and close the door. Switch the machine on; it initialises the brew unit drive, and Insert brew unit appears. Open the door and put the brew unit back.

If the brew unit cannot be removed, confirm with OK, switch off, wait approx. 2 minutes and switch on again. For capsule machines, confirm with OK, open the door, empty the grounds container, remove the capsule carousel and runners, refit the grounds container and check the opening to the right of the capsule plate insert for a jammed capsule.

Countertop machines (CM 53xx to 7xxx)

  1. Confirm the fault message with OK and switch the machine off.
  2. Unplug it at the wall socket and plug it back in after 2 minutes.
  3. Remove the brew unit, rinse it under running water and push the coffee ejector into the start position, without inserting the unit.
  4. Close the door and switch on. When Insert brew unit shows, put the brew unit back.

If the message returns, use less coffee and/or a finer degree of grinding. On CM 5000/5100/5200 with FAULT – 73, the drip tray was removed while the brew unit was moving, so empty and reinsert it, switch off, and press Espresso and Coffee together, then OK twice.
