Error code F233
Appliance Coffee Machine
Quick answer

F233 on a Miele coffee machine points to the cup rim sensor on built-ins and the central spout unit on countertops.

Model compatibility

Miele reuses codes across series and model years, so F233 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

F233 means the cup rim sensor is soiled, missing or wrongly fitted, or the central spout unit is wrongly assembled.

F233 on built-in coffee machines

For a built-in machine, Miele links F233 to the cup rim sensor, located under the central spout.

  • Soiled sensor: clean it at least once a week, more often if heavily soiled. Press the two retainers together to release it, then clean it in the dishwasher or by hand with warm water and a little washing-up liquid. Press it back into the holder on the central spout from below.
  • Sensor missing or wrongly inserted: if the central spout moves up and the sensor is bumped, for instance by a cup, it loses its reference position. Fit it correctly and press OK. Cup rim detection stays inactive and the spout stays in the top position until the next switch-on.
  • Container position: set the container so the sensor can detect the rim. A very wide opening, a spoon in the container, or a container that is not tall enough prevents this.
  • Drip tray: assemble it correctly.

F233 on countertop coffee machines

A freestanding machine shows F233 when the central spout dispensing unit is not correctly fitted or is wrongly assembled. Remove and dismantle the central spout parts, clean them if necessary, then reassemble them in the right order and reinsert them. Put the spouts on with the lug facing back, make sure all parts connect tightly, and push the spouts firmly onto the dispensing unit. A defective cup rim sensor is replaced by pressing it from below into its holder; Miele customer service can supply a new one.
